We all need wood for this hobby so where do you get yours from? :thinker:

Is there a place near us Jim that sell planks as al i ever see are blocks and bowl blanks. It would be nice if we could buy in cubic ft the wood that we need etc. :nooidea:

Funny you posted this Tony, as i was reading a write up in Novembers issue of Woodturning Magazine by Philip Greenwood, the same chap who learnt me to turn ... :bwink:

He says try to get it from source, sawmills, and tree surgeons for example. Easy said than done, i bet a sawmill isn't interested in my £50 lol ...

Look at auctions Tony. I went to John Boddy's last year and the cost of wood in general is frightening. I had the wife with me and she couldn't believe the price I was paying for small bits of timber so she suggested Wngetts in Wrexham. They have a weekly auction of all sorts. I picked up an oak drop leaf table for £20 and a nineteenth century drop leaf table made of mahogany so it will probably brazillian of cuban and you can't get that now for £30. I keep dropping in now and again looking for the rough stuff that no one else wants but as a way of buying timber its dirt cheap.

Thats a good tip mate, i would have never have thought bout that. My perception of wood used for turning was the unused stuff, like tree trunks etc. :whistling:
