Evening all!

Firstly, Merry Christmas! Hope Santa has treated you all well!

Now, I have a quandary.

A while ago I asked for opinions on the awvsl1000 and record cl3. Having had a play on both for about an hour, I've decided to go for the Axminster. (I know this won't be a universally popular decision, but I feel the Axminster suits me better.)

At the moment, Axminster are having a clearance sale, and the AWVSL900 is on sale for not much over £200. My question is, should I go for that or the bigger 1000? I know the headstock on the 900 is fixed, but swivels. I can still fit an extra large cricket Bat over the bed if needed. I'm not likely to be turning any massive bowls just yet. It looks to me the functionality is the same, barring being able to slide the head the full length of the bed (and it would save me £150 for more gear!)

What would you guys recommend?

Cheers,

Adam

Might have to nip down to Basingstoke or up to High Wycombe. Only an hours drive...

The High Wycombe store doesn't open on Sundays. Better reserve it online if your going to wait a couple of days or their stock will be gone as well

As Chas says, it saves driving there to find they have all gone .. But you do know you will wish you got the other after a few months don't you .. Don't worry it is common with us turners ..

Ok, update. Been to a local 2nd hand toolshop locally and been offered a big poolewood for £400. The chap didn't have any pics, but I'm going over later to look. Any thoughts? Would it be a better bet than the axi 1000?

Adam as others have said go for the biggest and best spec you can't afford. It will save you money in the long run. I had a few lathes before I bit the bullet and got me a Woodfast Maxi 1. Five years down the line I still love it as much as I did the day it was installed. If you are hooked on woodturning you won't be happy until you get what you concider is the best. Look at Alex the layout he has put on his new machine was massive but he won't need to replace that ever and will be able to turn whatever he fancies.

Going to look at it in the morning. From what I can glean, it's the Euro 1000 version, so a 1hp 3 phase motor, with inverter for use on a plug socket. Also comes with a bowl turning attachment for turning off bed, faceplate and a chuck of some description.

It's apparently had light use and I guess it's about 10 years old.

All for £400. Original retail price without the chuck and outrigger appears to be around £1300 when it was new.

Anyone know anything that I should look out for to make sure I don't make a bad decision?
