I am not keen on the blue area as to me it looks messy but the brown looks like it has been worked at and I like the effect that you have achieved and feel yoi should play more on that one.

I agree - the blue area is pretty horrid....all the colour seemed to run there...

Currently in the shed having another go - typing while waiting for sander sealer to dry!

We had a demo by Jason Lee Smith using spirit stain like what you have done and it looked great he used the clear spirit in a sprayer

Thanks guys. The plan is to try to get the 'rust' finish on the whole rim...just not quite working out! I've used a spray bottle to squirt the meths on but must still need to practise this technique!

I've tried a couple of times since to get the effect on the whole rim, without success! I might have to rework the failed areas with a different effect to complement the bit I actually like!
