Holly Tree wood

Anyone turned a holly, my neighbour has a huge holly tree that is rotten near the base. He is contacting the council about taking it down, we have to go this route as all the trees have Tree Preservation Orders on them.
I was thinking of getting my hands on some.

I use Holly wood quite a bit but find that it discolours very easy so tend to use it for work where I intend to colour. It does turn very easy and takes detail quite well.

See if you can get the root ball as well, give it a wash out with a high pressure washer and look at the knots you could get into a bowl, with the rot you may get some spalted sections as well; its a bit like hornbeam to turn.

Grab the wood if you can Ken. It's prone to splitting so seal the ends as soon as you can. As Derek says it can darken but is still usable and when it stays white it looks lovely. Nice to turn and will take fine detail. I love it.

I probably could snuffle the lot bit i have nowhere to keep that much wood.

What's wrong with the spare bedroom? Seriously though if its nice wood, keep it as long as you can and hang it from the workshop roof or get some pallet wood and stand it vertically on it off the ground.
