I had an idea for a bit of decoration so went to the turning shed and selected the plainest Sycamore blank I could find.
A few cuts later and it didn't look so plain after all! 10 1/2" x 3 1/2"

Horse Chestnut.
8 1/2" x 4 3/4" finished in Danish oil.
This was very punky and tore out with any tool and any direction of cut. Tamed the beast by applying sanding sealer and taking another cut once dry, still was a lot more sanding than usual. There are a few shakes as well but they seem pretty stable. The bottom was deliberately left a bit thicker than the walls to give a bit of substance as the wood is very light in weight.
