American Oak, finished with Yorkshire grit, standard & microfine. A it was a 'coaster' blank I tried a hot glue chuck for the first time so I could cut a small recess, 1st thing larger than a pen in 40 years, top & bottom views

Yes how right you are, Last faceplate turning I did was at night classes 40 years ago. The school didn't have the excellent chuck systems we have today. It was a joy to be able to mount using the recess & not have ugly screw holes in the bottom of the piece.
