Ive have a request by a potential customer to make a very specific and simple style of pen. (See image). I would like to take the order but the problem is the clip. Has anyone made one like this? My though was to go to a local crafts person who makes jewellery, but I suspect cost is going to be high. My other thought was to use a Shakespeare clip (not quite the same, but a simple design nonetheless. :thinks:

What materials does it need to be made fom?

Over the years I have made my own using aluminium, sterling silver, brass and copper. you will need .9 or 1mm thickness at the least.
Pic of one I made earlier this year.(Brass)

I have had them made by a tinsmith and jeweler in the past. but that does take the price up considerably.

Phil, has a selection of clips you might find one suitable.

Thanks Eamon, do you cut these on bandsaw and then refine with file?
I've found a company online who do CNC cutting of 1mm stainless steel sheet so im thinking i could get clips cut flat and then bend into shape? I thought about aluminium but wonder if it would have sufficient spring?

I have cut them with band saw but I don't like getting my fingers so close :goesred:

Scroll saw works well with non ferrous metals.

Generally I have cut them out by hand and then finish and file them to suit shape and design I want at the time.

Your CNC is an option worth looking at, Allly works ok if you have the 1mm it gives enough spring. That's in my experience

In my opinion the clip from a Cigar kit is similar often dealers sell replacement clips or if it is very special a Cigar kit is IMHO quite cheap and you can make a desk pen after without its clip.

Peter.
