Just a query. Has anybody on the forum used a Hunter carbide tipped tool, (Osprey/ Hercules)? I have been looking at them on the Tool Post website and could be tempted to splash the cash. I have been looking because I want to try harder materials for pens and don’t want to damage my gouges (plus I hate sharpening!)

The beauty of the tools I made is you just take the tip of the tool lay it flat on a diamond stone give it a quick rub and it is sharp again and it can be turned 3 times to a fresh sharp bit

Look at what Wood has shown That is the way to progress with this tool, so easy to make as he has already said it really is that simple why pay lots of money.

My tool is a totally different animal altogether although I do have an adapter which uses carbide tips I can't do anything with pictures this week I will be happy to show it off in another thread.
But if you want to see how its made look here

Ed flat diamond stone gentle rub while your watching TV in the evenings slide back gentle pressure forward keep it square on the stone at all times They will come up lovely.
Nice tools mate.

Hi,

i have one and use it for very hard manmade materials and its great at what it does.
The handles are a bit cheap, and if i had the skills like Woody i would make my own as they really are not worth the money.
I have the really small one.
I do have the simon hope ones as well for hollowing and they are much cheaper and better but i would still make my own if i could.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip Brian I will certainly do that .They do look well made and it would be a shame not to be able to use them.

What are you saying Pete? Of course you have the skills if you can use a grinder and a drill you can make one.

Take a guess
..still haven't managed to get edges back to what they were like when new

Get yourself a Sorby pro edge & one of their diamond belts, that'll sort them out............ & your bank balance....... :whistling::whistling::funny:

Otherwise a diamond slip stone, I have a double sided fine/extra fine one for all my carbide tipped tooling.

All I use is one of these and a drop of water.
And a bit of carborundum paste.
I do this with it while sitting and whiling away the rainy nights in the winter.
