Several applications. 1.With my mandrel which came complete/ with collet to the headstock. 2. On each lathe part of a set for close holding cartridges etc. 3. On several routers. 4. On my milldrill. 5. On my three metal lathes.

On my recent Cigar Pen I used a collet (20mm) to accurately drill the blanks. I turned the blank between centres first then popped it into the collet for drilling. It worked out really well.

The best type of collet chuck to get is one that screws directly onto the lathe spindle like this one as it allows work to pass right through the chuck:

SCT Wood Lathe Collet System

Sadly the only size I’ve seen recently is the 3/4 x 16 version. I’m sure other sizes used to be available?

Is this a lathe with a no1 morse taper inside the spindle, if so it chokes down the biggest collets?

i have the beall one. Same principle but is available 1 x 8. It is a really nice bit of kit, but is more expensive. I bought a full set of collets from ebay which was good value and very useful.

I guess so. Number 1 morse is pretty small isn’t it.

My metalwork lathe is MT3 and the through bore is a useful 20mm which really suits the ER32 chuck I have for it.

Collet chucks are very useful, I have several ER32 types for both of my Lathes and Milling machine.
