personally i like the look of bog oak and african blackwood but if you get a chance turn a piece of leadwood it varies quite a bit in colour but you can get some dark pieces it turns nicely and you can get a really good finish on it to.

I have a couple of very dark buffalo horn. I bought them as a job lot, so not sure if they are real or synthetic. Woodwise, African Blackwood is the blackest I have and will take a shine. All the ebony I have had has some brown to it, but I have seen pics of jet black stuff. I imagine that is hard to get and megabucks in price.
