It looks like a drift pin to me.....you will have an elongated hole through a shaft where the end of your Morse taper sits. This goes into the elongated slot and bears against the end of the spline, as you push it in, it pushes the spline out...... easier to do than say:winking:

The drift you are looking at is mainly used on pillar drills that can take a morse taper.

Lathes normally have a knock out bar and if buying new will come with one. The bar is normally used in the headstock as modern lathes have a self ejecting taper in the tailstock.

What lathe are you getting

What Derek said.

You don't need one of those Joe, especially if you go for the Axi lathe you were talking about.
If you pay Vince a visit I guarantee you'll find plenty to spend your money on

Not used on a wood lathe where the aim is to have a through hole in the tail stock for a number of reasons. On a Pillar Drill it is inserted in the slot above the drill chuck to drift it out.

Another thing worth mentioning is that morse taper on the newer type lathes quite often have self ejection system (Careful with the replies to that:whistling::whistling::whistling:) where you wind the quill fully in and when it is nearly fully in the morse taper becomes loose.

At the moment I can't go anywhere after a fall down some stairs. Hope to be up and running soon.
