I got a Clarke 40" lathe a while back and have used it quite a bit but want to get into pen turning, as it doesn't have a morse taper nor can a chuck be attached im not sure how to attach a mandrel if it is even possible at all, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Will of course it is it can use a face plate therefore has a threaded shaft to screw on a chuck etc. If it has the bed ex tension taking it to 1 metre I would remove the 2nd half and instal the end plate there. If it has a morse taper in the tail stock you are home and as the fireman says hosed and dry.

Peter.

I have just checked Machine Marts site and they do do a faceplate and a chuck for your lathe.... neither look to hot though. It may be possible to use TBC bushes and 'turn between centers' Phil Dart supplies some as I'm sure others do or find out the thread size on the head stock and look for a collet chuck to fit.....there are options:fingers:

Anything is possible, but at what cost..:thinks:

If you have a faceplate you could mount a 3 jaw chuck to it.

Chronos used to do a chuck that you can remove the backplate and fit it to your own. You would need someone with a metal lathe to drill your faceplate to suit the mounting holes on the new chuck tho.

you could get an engineering company to make up an adaptor for you to fit any proprietary scroll chuck you choose.

But, there is a cost. That's why so many haven't bothered and have traded up and brought an hobby Axminster or a Record machine..

If you have a metal lathe at your disposal then sure you could get anything made for it.

Turning between centres is a good option if you have a single point dead centre available.
