I’ve been planning a pen set for my wife’s 30th next week for ages. I ordered the burr walnut after getting a suggestion on here for where to find some...

It hadn’t arrived after far longer than expected so contacted the sender. It was returned to them yesterday in pieces, as he says, “looks like it’s been run over by a fork lift” :(

I now don’t have time to source anywhere else, so the wife is likely going to get nothing at all for her 30th as I spent all my money on the pen kits and burr walnut.

I have one possible way out - my dad has a lump of burr ash from a tree that came down many years ago. It’s solid, seems dry (damp meter doesn’t make a sound anyway), I *think* I could get a couple of pens out of it maybe.

Problem is, it’s ash. My wife doesn’t like pale coloured wood. It’s also not going to be possible to stabilise it. If I turn it and dye it just with some stain, how do burrs dye up? Am I likely to get a pen out of it without it being stabilised?

You can turn brittle soft timber if your slow, patient and have sharp tools. Another trick is to dribble CA on as you go, but this will stop you dying the wood after.
When you do get this Walnut pen finished it should certainly be something special!

I have a couple of Black Walnut blanks you can have, I don't think they will be as nice as Walnut burl. They look very plain.

If you want them I can get them in the post Monday morning.
