NOTE TO PHIL: I posted here as part of the project is a pen but please move if in the wrong place.

This is one of those projects "designed", if I use the term loosely, on the back of an envelope and developed as it progressed.
My granddaughter is an enthusiastic Harry Potter fan so I decided to make her a standard wand, then a pen to go with it followed by a box to put it in, I haven't yet decided how on earth I'm going to make it cast real spells though. :rolling:

The wand and pen ae out of walnut and ash with a crystal and bead pinched from my daughter, the box is approx 480 x 100 x 70 mm made from mahogany of some kind. continuing the mitred corners through the lid was deliberate but likely a mistake as it has sharpish corners and I inserted a magnet to keep the lid closed.

The wood burning was a first for me although I bought the machine from a boot sale 30 years ago I've never used it.

Thanks for the comments guys, it's easy to please a 7 year old and she doesn't need magic to twist people around her little finger. Not me of course. :whistling::rolling:

Bob just sent you a PM.

But for those of you wanting magic tricks for Xmas here is a half hour piece if I can describe it here well.

Take a round sirocco pen sized wooden tube without the brass bit inside. Ie make it.

Get a sturdy elastic band and break it,
stick the broken ends into the tube and seal the end with a wooden plug the same as the tube so a part of the unbroken end is poking out ie a loop dont leave too much elastic in the tube , just enough to feel it by the uninitiated..
Make a wooden dowel that runs smoothly into the main part of the tube with a crochet hook on the end that goes in the tube and make a top that is the same outer diameter as the tube but with an ovalized head such that when you pinch it hard it can ping back into the tube ( the head should be a parabolic curve narrow at the top to the diameter of the tube this dowel and top may be 1 piece or 2).

You know how to ping the dowel back in but the trick is to trick the person into thinking that you are catching the elastic with the hook. Grandkids love them My Dad calls it a shove wood he is now 97 and if you need a picture I think I have a cheap Chinese one somewhere.

PS I forgot to say I love the wand set
