Second pen turned today. I tried the CA finish for the first time because the curly birch are so full of inperfections, so it would fill them in. My finger did almost get stuck to the cloth thst I used, lucky me that the CA gets really hot before completerly setting. I hoped that I was going to miss the "branch" (?), but it got in the middle of the pen insted. I was lucky it did not splinter. It was really fun. I made a crude drill jigg that worked very well. The pics whas tsken with my iphone. I will take some with my DSLR later on.

Looking great, here's a tip for the CA, I always stop the lathe, apply then use kitchen or paper towel. Don't use cotton sheet, else what'll happen if it gets caught in the lathe is that it'll take your fingers with it, paper towel just rips, trust me, the first time it happens it scares the hell outta ya! As for the pen, I wish you could have seen my second effort as it was no where near as good as yours, the shape looks great, the wood looks great and the finish is excellent, certainly a pen to be proud of there, and the drill jig is perfect, after a while I got bored of trying jigs and bought a proper pen vice, but your jig is a lot better than anything I came up with, so all credit to you on that one. Well done again, great all round effort

Thanks!

I was wery careful when I wrapped the cloth and was quite afraid for it to catch so I will surly start using a paper towel insted. Much better.

The jig worked well. I can make some other holes in it for other blanks and add some sort of fast good way to easily set and release the pressure. I will buy a good one later on when my economy and interest allows for more investments. :)

Emil

I read your palm and it said I predict an addiction taking place. Lovely pen love the knot.

Peter.

Woke up this morning with a dry mouth, trying to steady my trembeling hands to write: No! I can quit whenever I want! ;)

Emil

The reason that your fingers got nearly stuck is not because of lack of heat but because water is a ca glue activator and it is the humidity from your hands that causes it to set quickly. As said above if you get a sheet of kitchen paper towel and roll it so that you get a flat 2 cm wide strip you can then rub the CA glue on fast until it sets. Look here WoodTurning BLO and CA Pen Finish - YouTube .

Three things from comments I use medium CA as well, your pics improved no end with your new box. Third was loved the little video of Pierres but I don,t use oil any more one (one less process ).

Brought the pen back to life.

Peter.
