A gift for a friend's daughter. She's really into steampunk.

This is a commercially avilable kit. It's a steampunk bolt action.

The wood section is Harry Potter oak flooboard. She's a big Potter fan too.

I really didn't like the very slick and toylike finish on the metal parts, so I refinished them. More grungy and verdigris.

I'm a leatherworker too, so I knocked up a pen scabbard to go on a steampunk themed belt I made for her last year.

This pen has oomph Kark, realism and the right use with that blank for a follower. Beaut design in the blank mate.

Thanks very much.

I used to be a prop and modelmaker in the film industry.
The grunge is basically artist's acrylic paints. You need to rough up the clear coat on the kit parts. I used 1000 grit paper to give it a good key.
Then dark brown acrylic. Paint it all over then wipe it all off with a rag. It'll sit in all the low bits.
Next greens for the verdigris. Same method as the brown. Paint on, wipe off. You can add detail bits with a small brush.
Finally you make a wash of the dark brown and water and dab it all over to make a dirty film over the whole piece. It knocks back the shiny bits and kills the contrast.
Let it dry.
Ren wax over the top if you like, but I prefer to just let it wear with handling.

The more knackered it gets, the better :)

Great idea and skills, ever tried "forgery" haha, you could turn an Ikea bedside table into a "Chippendale" writing bureau!!!! Lovely work.:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

I hope some time soon to be able to produce totally original 'steampunk' industrial pens with cast brass and copper parts and hand made leather wallets to put them in.
