Turning went well with the African blackwood, but the scratches were so difficult to get out despite using a screw at the end and going 400 grit to 12000 polish, also not impressed with the kit, the lid is a fraction off because the barrel provided is too long

Hi Ant.....try sanding along the grain with the lathe stopped on the coarser grit sizes....when i finish with the turning i radial sand as you do but befor i change grits i always sand along the barrels....then wipe with a cloth/ wet finger to remove any trace of previous grit.....yes another stage but it will cut down a lot of effort too:thumbs::thumbs:

NO ... not as Flexi says ... that man will put anything in his mouth, especially a sawdust laden finger :funny:

Radial sand with 240 or 320 ... then laterally with 320, 400, 600 ... job done.

Wipe down with Meths, it evaporates and lets you see any scratches you may have missed.


THEN, stick the turned tube into your mouth and see if it tastes nice ... Flexi taught me that one :funny::funny::funny: ::face::face::face:

Not much more to say. The meths also removes any grease & oil from the timber as Blackwood is naturally oily, your finish will go on better.

Nice pen, now you know what to do about sanding, give it a go ad you'll see a difference.
