Gold Omega with a old oak burr ten coats of CA and carnauba wax finish fitted with a calligraphy nib
Had trouble with the finish tried seven times each time I finished the blank and polished it formed bubbles around the small knots in the blank temp in the den was 70 to 75 the only way I could put a finish on was to spray activator between coats has any one had this happen?
The oak burr was clean and dry and had used many times

Very nice Barry. I always use ca and have never had bubbles formed. Are you using thick ca by any chance?

When you say bubbles, do you mean dull spot where it looks like the CA hasn't adhered properly?
If so, I get that frequently. One explanation is it can be caused by oily woods and can be reduced by cleaning prior to finishing with acetone.
They are very annoying and, at least, double your work, but the end result is worth the determination.

Dull spots is most often from the ca being to thin. Also you have some moisture issues going on.

Whatever you did on the final go really worked well Barry, it looks a smashing pen for sure ..

Can't help with the bubbles as i have never had the issue? Were there any voids around the knotted area?
