Hi all found another piece of walnut...again from a Holland and Holland shotgun stock...more trouble than its worth...
I had a few issues with the finish on the last one...there is still a lot of oil impregnated into the wood. So a couple of coats of friction finish last night and CA today, but for what ever reason the first attempt just pealed off as i cleaned the ends 3 goes later and a lot of lost patience....:thinks:20150721_174811.jpg

worth persevering with. beautiful result.

was it an offcut from H&H or an old stock that has been cut down?

That is beautiful. I once emailed Holland and Holland to see if they had any old wood or offcuts. They replied asking all about kits for pens etc and then didn't reply any more...

I love that pen though, it was well worth the effort.

That's a very nice pen with a great finish. Next time you make one clean the walnut with meths to degrease it before applying a finish. This should help.

Looks well turned and finished from here.
Nicely done.

On my H&H stock blanks I used MINWAX Polyurethane finish.

I should have thought about that...i have some Tru oil kicking around from my gunstocking days...just not sure of its longjevity on a pen:thinks:

Lovely pen.
For those that don't know about shotguns, with regard to oil and Holland and Holland stocks, it is well worth watching the attached video.
It is long, but if you fast forward to about 1:22 then you will see the oil is so stubborn.
H&H and Purdey are the finest, hand made guns in the world. Watch this video and you will start to understand why.
You will find the bit about the miniature, working shotguns and cartridges particularly interesting.

Enjoy.
