I am slowly building a collection of woods of the world in the form of Euro pens (they are relatively cheap, easy to make and show a reasonable amount of wood). I recently got a blank of Cotinus coggygria = Smoke tree or Smoke bush a garden favourite. The wood is very yellow with dark brown markings.

The image above has the pen halves have been twisted to try to show both sides in one picture.

You have a lifetimes work to catalogue all the woods John. Its a very nice pen you've made there, I haven't heard of the wood but it looks similar to Sumac or the Rain Tree.

Perhaps I will not quite get them all done. Part of the problem is finding them.

You are right they are similar. Cotinus and Sumac are in closely related genera. I thought I would show the cotinus as it is a plant that is grown in many gardens in the UK and grows to a size suitable for pens.

One area up north over here showed up two hundred different trees so many fellas have made knee high small boots, eggs, balls, to display I like the use of pens for this purpose all the best in your quest.

Can you recommend any suppliers of pen blanks who have a large stock of Australian woods. I know of Timberbits but they do not stock many different ones.
