In the Pen Turning forum Penpal suggested I show some of the pens I have made. These are part of a collection of woods I have started to build as and when I can find new timbers. I chose the European style because they are cheap, critical as I already have about 150, and more importantly they have a lot of wood in the design. Sierra types would not be so good.

Rosewood 1.jpg

All these 15 are dalbergia species ie the true rosewoods. The left most of the two black ones (8) is Dalbergia louvelii (Bois de Rose) a super wood with a lovely dark violet colour when freshly turned which unfortunately darkens with age until it looks very much like dalbergia melanoxylon (African blackwood) which is on the right (9). Probably my favourite (at present) is the 5th one = Dalbergia frutesens. This image does not show all the detailed beauty of the woods but I wanted to show them all together.

Wonderful timber pens true collectors versions John so very glad you have shown them they are excellent. My memory for true names is going with the next birthday being 81 soon. Look up New Guinea Rosewood if you have not got one I will send you one as far as I know its a true member of the Rosewood Family and I have outstanding blanks a couple left send me a pm with your addy mate. The colours are fantastic. Timberbits.com David and I did a swap years ago through the U Beaut Forum in Australia we met 200 miles from mine in Sydney for a Working With Wood Show Davids pen for me was terrific the normal NG Rosewood mine are the burl form. David gave me a choice of pens I chose the yellowish pen it has quite a lift as well sort of shot silk effect. I will look through my stash not sure of Australian Rosewoods except the nominal Rosewood as sold. Glad your not sweating the small stuff and showing your pens thanks for showing.

I was trying to send the following as the rest of the PM I just sent to you but the forum software thinks I am trying to send a link ?? I have no idea why. Computers !!!! I do not think they will ever catch on.

Pterocarpus indicus = N.G. rosewood. According to the web this genera is very closely related to the true dalbergias. Thanks very much for the offer. I do have one example of the normal timber but if I understand correctly yours are burls I would love to have one.

I only have a few Ausi woods and would like to find a supplier of more. I have what Timberbits can supply with a couple still on their way.
What I have is as follows - Based in internet searches I think these are all native Australian

Mulga Acacia aneura
Wattle, Silver Acacia mearnsii
Silky Oak, Northern Cardwellia sublimis
Red river gum Eucalyptus camaldulensis
Jarrah Eucalyptus marginata
Yellow Box (burr) Eucalyptus melliodora
Malle, Red burr Eucalyptus oleosa
Salmon gum burr Eucalyptus salmonophloia
Silky-oak, Queensland Grevillea robusta
Beefwood Grevillea striata
Huon pine. Lagarostrobos franklinii
Tasmanian Myrtle Nothofagus cunninghamii
Woody pear Xylomelum pyriforme

The Huon pine was interesting in that although plain it is nothing like Northern pines. I also have a few NZ species.

If you know of anyone who could add to these I would be extremely please to know about them and their contact details if you have them.

PNG Rosewood = Pteracarpus indicus. Not a true rosewood (all of which belong to the genus Dalbergia). It is also known as Narra or Solomons Padauk as it is indeed a true Padauk. The burr of the same tree is what we all know as Amboyna Burr.

A wonderful collection there John and nicely uniform in shape, looks to be a nice finish to them all :thumbs:

The pic makes them look rather more glossy than they actually are. For my purpose I do not like high gloss finishes as I think it hides the true character of the wood. I much prefer a satin finish. But thanks for the compliment anyway.

I did not know that about Amboyna burr. I will add the info into my database. Thanks:thumbs:

Since I now realise that your aim is not just True Rosewoods and what you have shown is some of them I have at least a hundred or more different Aussie blanks plus I can let you have at my cost freight you will have to consider as well. My main supplier sent me a hundred and fifty total last year different ones he cuts for me for Slims so often I get two separate pieces to make a slim pen which would suit you. Fortuitist I am downsizing my extensive stash literally thousands of blanks. My main supplier cuts samples 6 inch by whatever and keeps blank stuff for me, takes several months to get a parcel for me so over time I have quite a bunch of great stuff some getting rarer. You can have first dibs on my stuff thats going.
