The short story is that this took about a year of head scratching. The cross inlay I had done previously in a simple segmented design, but I always wanted to figure out how to include an oval design as a picture frame. My hope is to now try 5-10 other designs inside of the picture frame.

Knights of old were very bold, unusual challenges right there Mark. Labour intensive blanks should call for a higher return IMHO.

Very mate I like it. That is something I would love to have a go at.

I take little credit for most of the process of cutting the window, using veneers and a matching curved insert - My contribution is the segmented insert. Most of the process and the jig I found from others. Basically a drill press, a hole saw (I'm playing with 2" and will try 1 3/4" and 1 1/2") and a jig to hold the blank. I did add a few features to the jig . Here is some of the essentials.

I somehow missed this first time round.

Really like this and the amount of effort paid off.

Not only would I struggle to do something like this, even if I did I would then struggle to remember how I did it!

A cracker!

Cheers
Ash
