Think it's maple

Ok so here is my latest pen, again a gift for family and I think it's maple but not sure so I have supplied a image of the wood I used.

Pen was turned in short/end grain just to see if I could ( why not ) making my own rules.
The pen is from Beaufort ink first of many I think, good quality kit and went together really well when I printed the right instructions off.

so first here is the wood Maple but please confirm

I quite like the way the grain turned out but as I'm really new to this please C&C all positive and negative comment welcome.

Really like that, its right up my street.
I cross cut many timbers to get a different effect but you have to be very careful on the end faces with regard to chipping or cut out. (happened to me many a time)
To overcome this I soak the end faces with the thinnest CA glue you can get and let it work its way into the grain prior to turning. Works a treat.

That's a nice pen and having done it cross cut, all credit to you, I do it with trepidation and that's after 15 years turning, Andrew is right the chances of tear out on such a small piece are huge but I cant see any. Obviously as it is cross cut its very difficult to tell which wood it is . But well done its a lovely piece with a beautiful grain.
