Billy,
Some say the slimline is the penturners starting point. Why? because it is the cheapest? It is certainly the poorest design and as a result one of the most difficult to get a satisfactory result. Turning a straight barell to rest alongside the angle of the nib is always going to draw the fingers to that ridge. The shape of the slimline nib is awful at best. Next design disaster is the plain, flat centreband. Why? What is the purpose of the centreband? - to manage the interface between adjacent parts, and the centre band on the top two fails succinctly being flat and untextured, again drawing the finger to any discrepancy, and there will be a differential however small.
I know some like a straight narrow pen and there is currently no other option, but the concava pen nib has a profiled nib so there is light at the end of the tunnel. I replace these horrible centrebands with streamline centrebands from TB or ebay. The centreband on the lower pen is better in that it has a shape to it. If anyone wants any of these centrebands I have over 300 of them that are spare from swopping the supplied version to extra streamline centrebands, free to anyone who sends me a stamped addressed envelope!
Think you have done a good job in the face of pen kit adversity! Is the walnut turned slightly below the nib or is it the pictures?
Why not just buy the streamline kit it works out cheaper
I don't buy the kit because it is the cheapest .. I buy this kit because i can make it in a style which i like the look of .. But like Billy, until i became more proficient in pen making i used all of the kit and made straight barrels, if he sticks with the slimlines i am sure in the coming months we will see a style change in his pens. I feel that this kit is the best there is for it's versatility and to be creative with ..
Nice trio of pens BTW Billy ..
