Transfer punches ! What are they? What can a pen turner use them for?
Well in my experience they are the most under rated tool that any pen turner can ever wish for.
What are they.
Taken from wikipedia.
"A transfer punch is a punch (usually in an index set) of a specific outer diameter that is non-tapered and extends the entire length of the punch (except for the tip). It is used to tightly fit the tolerances of an existing hole and, when struck, precisely transfer the center of that hole to another surface."
Is that what we use them for? no, to be honest there is more interesting things to use them for.
What does a pen turner use them for?
1. They can be used for pen kit disassembly, by selecting the right sized transfer punch you can knock the pan parts apart to hopefully recover a pen kit.
A nice you tube link here from Pen State showing a slimline kit but the same method is used for all types of kits.

2. they can also be used to aid the squaring the blanks off,

If you have a metal lathe they can also be turned down to suit the size of a standard barrel trimmer, used instead of the standard kits. How many times do you find that there isn't one to fit your pen kit?
3. they can also be used to make your own pin chucks.
The pic below is a transfer punch with a filed flat face to turn it in to a pin chuck. (Apologies for quality of pic as only had I phone with me at time, but you get the idea.)

I used this on a collet chuck, you can always use it on a Jacobs chuck as well, still works.
A Piece of Walters work again (Sorry Walter)

Just s starter, anyone use them for anything else?
Any other thoughts?
