Hello friends

I'm looking for ideas on an indexing jig for a 12" Lathe as my Axminster lathe doesn't have this feature I can't even lock the head drive in place.

I got cross with Axminster when they sold me a lathe which supposedly had 36 point indexing and due to some bad design or manufacturing they drilled the holes in the wrong place and I ended up with only 12 point indexing!! They then found out that their whole range was wrong at the time (so they had to change it) . There are other suppliers however try here to name but one, Paul Howard Fluting Jig Index System - Olivers Woodturning failing that put 'index wheel woodturning uk' into google and follow the leads. In my case I had previously bought a 24 point indexing wheel and made my own jig holder so I was lucky

I have in the past seen several wood turning chucks that have indexing slots or holes around the back edge. Apart from that the most common option is to mount a bought or made disc with a selection of holes in it behind the Chuck. As mentioned Paul Howard sells a indexing disc. Making your own from plywood shouldn’t prove too difficult but may take some time to mark out and drill. Alternatively there are lots of indexing plates available for metal working applications but they all seem rather small in diameter so may prove difficult to fit to a wood lathe. This is the type of thing:

I have an index ring which fits my Axminster Chuck & Axminster tools also sell an indexing arm to lock the chuck in place.

I’m not sure they make them anymore as many of their lathes have an index ring built in? Mostly only 24 holes though so not too useful.

Here where I live a plastics firm used their lazer cutter to create a disk centre holed and radius holed in just a few minutes, it was magic for me , years ago and later on to create faceted pens I used a 72 toothed gear with a smaller meshing gear for totally adjustable and strong holding. I used a spring to hold the smaller gear down on the 72 toothed one. Works for me. Takes a very competent person to make a ring device drilling your own holes .

Peter.
