This is a two fold post really.
I was asked what tools I use to make my carving knives, whether I use machinery or do it by hand.
I use my lathe with various jigs and bits to grind and shape then put the edge on with aluminium oxide at 400 grade.
Finished by hand on strops to hone a polished sharp edge. here are the jigs and bits I use.

Yes I do have bench grinders and stuff but by the time I have moved everything around to set them up, it's easier and quicker to grab a keyless chuck and use my jigs which are always under the lathe bench.

Secondly I think its a bloody good reason for Bob to keep his spare lathe and set it up in a similar manor init?

I use a 1 mm cutting disc to cut the blade.

Next is a grindstone for the shaping (I have put a gouge grinding guide on to show it has other uses)

Cleaning and rust removal is done on a course sanding disc.

Followed by a wire brush and rope wheel.

Another wheel treatment working to finer and getting a nice overall finish, although it's nowhere near finished.

To be continued due to pic number restrictions init?

Next I put the edge on using abrasive disc.

P1090618.jpg

Then a leather with grinding paste to give some sharp on the edge.

P1090619.jpg

After this it's ready for some honing and an evening of polishing and stropping by hand.

I hope that shows the practice behind my way of making a carving jack along with the tut I did in another post which I can't find cos I cant remember the title init?
Al these jigs and bits are made with stuff you have in your shed at zero or little cost and that's only a few of things I do on my lathe.
I have four lathes set up and ready to go at an instant with all different projects or jigs on .
Bob I urge you don't part with your mini lathe you will miss it, guaranteed.

Brian, PLEASE be careful with that angle grinder disc! That thing could be lethal in a few different ways ...

... Just telling ya 'cos I love ya, dad! Otherwise I love the ingenuity and you've given me a few ideas.
