Paul,

Out here in Australia look up U Beaut Products they sell a range of Dyes (liquid) that work just fine what I do must admit seldom is finish turn the pen apply the dye let it dry friction check then use a brown waxstick and buff lightly works for me so any reputeable dye will do be carefull some are very dark head for lighter rather than you can always double dye.

Have success Peter.

What you want from a wood stain for pen making is one that will not raise the grain when applied and will not fade or change colour over time.

For the first reason you should avoid water based stains and for the second you should look for something that is not sensitive to UV.

Chestnut spirit stains fulfil both of these criteria and they do a sample pack with 25ml bottles of each colour which will last ages for small items like pens.

Thanks for your help,Would those Stains/Dyes,be able to penetrate the whole way through ,say a 12 mm/15mm blank ? So that if I wanted to use a Green a Dyed Blank for Segmenting , the Green would have penetrated ,and show clearly as a Segmented part of the Pen ,whenever it's Turned.?

Not really Paul not unless you soaked the blank in a bowl filled with stain and left it overnight!!!!

The only way to guarantee that sort of penetration I would thing is to do it in a pressure pot

Although this is for resin casting the principle would be the same for what you propose to do
As Terry says if you soak your blank in dye and let it leach into the end grain might also work dependant on grain type and how long you soak it.

This pen was done using water based dye See Hee!!

I doubt very much that food dye would soak all the way through the wood, unless it is the very punky stuff, thou i could be wrong!! :winking:
