    Chuck Jaws

When a chuck is not tightened up or even on the lathe what level of movement is acceptable?
I have the allen keys tightened on the individual jaws and the chuck is open about 12mm (gap between top of jaws) and I have movement on each jaw of about 2mm towards the centre and outside of chuck is this an acceptable amount or does it not matter?

Just looked at my Super Nova and it does the same to a lesser extent but it wasn't mounted on the spindle so I couldn't push/pull too hard. I think you are fine. It is the tolerance between the jaws and the scroll they engage.

They seem to vary but my wood turning chucks don’t seem to be as good in this respect as my metal turning chucks.

the chuck jaws will move slightly due to their fit in the scroll. ( unless it’s an independent jaw chuck) inside the chuck body .

To test concentricity grip a round piece of silver steel in the jaws and use a dti to measure 5h3 variation in rounds you spin it BY HAND NOT UNDER POWER !!!

To measure internal concentricity get a round bit of tube put it on the jaws and expand the jaws into it. Then measure the internal contact surface again using a dti fixed to an arm or magnetic base.
