Cabinet Pattern Screwdriver

As many of you already know I like restoring old tools and sometimes making my own. I also like the feel of a good old fashioned wooden handled cabinet screwdriver rather than modern plastic. It is however very difficult to find decent quality wooden handled screwdrivers with Philips or Pozidrive shanks. They do exist, Joseph Marples make them but I am not keen on the appearance or the price, a set of three would set me back over £30 which doesn't sound much but is hard to justify to myself when I already have more screwdrivers than any one person could ever need.

There are also these but again I am not keen on the appearance, the magnetic interchangeable tip makes them look more like soldering irons than screwdrivers and I am guessing the balance would feel all wrong too with too much weight at the tip.

So, nothing else for it than to design and make my own and here is the result. The quick change chuck is a cheap one from E-bay similar in design to the Trend Snappy one, the brass ferrule is from Ashley Iles and the set of screwdriver bits is from CK and has been in my toolbox for a while. The handle is apple and finished with gunstock oil.

Efficient and neat always worried me using screwdrivers with two flats on the handle much prefer your design.

If you can't find what you want make it. I like this little tool well put together. What have you used to hold the bit in the handle and will it take the forces of a stubborn screw without giving out and twisting in the handle.

It is a force fit into a 6.5mm hole Derek. Should be sufficient for most normal purposes. Stubborn screws get subjected to the more modern expedient of an impact driver. :wink:
