It looks more like spalted beech to me.
It does but I don’t think it is - it turns differently, seems to have a different composition…

In the photo below you can see some of the other blanks and you will see that the amount of spalting varies from none on the left (but more dark wood) - some dark wood and some spalting in the middle one and full spalting and no dark wood on the right - a real mix…

That's lovely, who doesn't like a nice letter opener, we should use more post!!
The wood is stunning, and yes it has a beech look but the character of the grain looks different when you enlarge it...the middle above looks almost cross cut...
Interesting inclusions too....
