What a Waste,

And I am not referring to the Ian Dury and the Blockheads song that I can no longer get out of my head :ciggrin:

12 yes 12 blanks ruined today, what makes it worse is that 9 of them (6 acrylic) I ruined whilst trying to drill the wrong size hole :rolling:

For the classic Elegant Beauty for some reason or other I have written 12mm drill bit on the jiffy bags, I found out the hard way that the tubes are actually 10.5mm yet the instructions I have found state 27/64"

Spent over 3 hours in the shed and managed to get 4 drilled ready for tubes :sob:

Gluing tomorrow ...... Oh deep joy

its been that kind of day here too..
tried another off centre project, that blew off the lathe and whacked me in the arm ( no damage, apart from the undies )..smashed my glue block
over drilled a corian project and wrecked it
and my bandsaw blade snapped
gave up, went in to watch telly before i hurt myself
sometimes the universe just doesnt want us to win :rolling:

Be careful mate it can be a very dangerous hobby at times.

This sounds very familiar we have all been there well except me of course lol lesions to be learnt always measure tubes till your 100 % sure it only takes a second

Gary with that many failures you need to take a look at the way you are preparing the blanks or are you impatient and rushing things.

With acrylics or any form of plastic blanks I always cut them over length and only drill just over the tube length and not break out of the bottom then cut the waste off that is a way to prevent the drill bit breaking out the last bit also drill slow and if need be a little wter while drilling to keep the blank cool while drilling

[MENTION=449]Dalboy[/MENTION] you are right on all counts, I tend to get frustrated when it goes wrong and that leads to a domino effect of me rushing and not setting things up properly.

When I was drilling the hole at the bottom was so close to the edge that I had to discard the blank. That can only be the blank not standing square. I have made a mini Jig today that will always make the blank stand up at 90 degrees. I tested it and it works, I just need to alter things a little so I can have the blank fixed upright from 2 sides. :thinks:

I am going to take a long hard look at my drilling this week and introduce something else to the equation, I am looking at a way I can drill the blank before it gets sized on the bandsaw but need to minimize waste whilst doing it. Nothing I like better than making an easy task difficult :funny::funny::funny:

If its of any help to you we all make mistakes. He who has never made a mistake has made nothing. I remember when i was an apprentice many, many years ago we launched a brand new 42’ yacht only to find it at the bottom of the marina the next day. Now that’s a mistake!!
