first try at tap and die on wood lathe

All the wrong sizes for actual pen making... but I had some "scraps" laying and I just found the 10 euro tap and die set I bought years ago... Tried it just to see if I could do it on a wood lathe with freehand tapping and threading. Time to save up some real money for the correct sizes and...

    Successful couple of weeks

I haven’t posted much for a while having been on an enforced slow down after the surgeons decided that they want to play with the zipper they stuck in my chest 3 times since September. Anyway I'm back at 95% functionality (it won’t get more than that), and I have had a successful couple of...

    Omg what a k h

Just sussed out I’ve been such a k head lol Had another blow out on some African wood this morning with a brand new drill bit in my dp. I’ve worked with modding metal parts on cars and bikes for years and always had the slow and steady (spray with water keep it cool) way of working..... So...

    Part payment to bowling club

A local bowling club were selling their old spiked rollerwhich I thought would be very useful towed behind my little lawn tractor. They wanted far too much money but it's an expensive professional roller so struck a bargain with some cash and half a dozen pens for them to sell on to members...

    wood allergies

I have been reading a thread on the IAP forum entitled " Allergic reaction to wood " and there are some pretty horrific reactions to different species. This is new to me as I have not had any problem ( I won't say "touch wood " ! ) Is the problem more associated with exotic timbers ? Anyone...

    Logie Steading Timber festival

Living up in the Highlands I do not get to many events where there are woodwork and demonstrations so it was nice to get out to Logie Steading near Forres on Saturday. It was a very interesting event I did not realize there is a sawmill there with lots of lovely wood for sale and managed to get...

    Olive Mistral

Finally got a bit of time to turn a pen. I had two off-cuts of holy land olive wood. Finished using Phil's melamine technique.

    Hollow form

Glad to have my lathe back up and running, it seems strange as I knew by the sound how it was behaving but now the motor is so quiet. Started out with a very uninteresting piece of wood and was going to use black stain to enhance the grain that is there but did not get the desired effect so went...

    Clarification

A few month ago I was looking up about issuing Certificate of Authenticity with pens, somewhere ( which I cannot find now ) stated that they are a waste of time. Apparently each individually piece of wood should be tested to confirm what is said is correct. Has anyone else come across this...

    Has anyone

Just wondering if anyone has turned DENA wood. It must be one of the hardest woods around. If you want to practice sharpening gouges just use this wood. Gouges need plenty of sharpening every couple of minutes.
