How long do they last?

They can go on for 50yrs Neil at a push. This one was kept by an elderly gentleman who also had many other birds of which many were rescued from the wild. Unfortunately all the wild ones which may have had a wing missing etc had to be put down because unfortunately without the proper paperwork nobody would be able to take them on without the risk of DEFRA confiscating all of that persons birds. I am toying with the idea of starting up a charity so that we can rescue wild birds but I think it will take a long time and its very expensive with an overnight stay with a bird specialist vet costing over £300. It may seem cruel keeping a bird with only one wing but birds of prey are naturally lazy and if fed are happy to just sit in a tree until they need food again so if they don't have to find food they are happy.

Hi Peter,

Unfortunately with poisoning rabbits, its not just the food your removing, starving the bird but a poisoned rabbit will also poison a bird. We have seen several cases of lead poisoning in Buzzards that have eaten rabbits that had been shot. Unfortunately they are very susceptible to lead and had to be put to sleep.
