Do you need a proper Camera or SLR to get decent quality photos?

So as I said before, upping your lighting should solve a lot of your problems. By the way, a bar clamp makes a very good substitute for a tripod in this type of application.

If you have a suitable camera a tripod and a cable/remote release makes things easier. You could instead use a self timer if the camera has one.
