I will do some pen engraving after Xmas, I have 2 machines but need to build a small pen rotary for the laser. I will be able to do full wrap around patterns :thumbs:

I think Walter may be up for that challenge.
I believe he engraved a pen some time ago and then erased it and reworked the barrel :thinks:
If not he will probably put me right

You're right Dan us olduns have been there seen it done it init?
I remember Walter doing it just that and I would think Neil duz two .

You can buy mini lasers quite cheaply. Some say they are little more than toys but will engrave/burn images fairly effectively and it just depends on your needs if it will suit your purpose or not. Commercial type laser engravers start at around 40W power and these mini lasers are only 3000mW or less so only a fraction of the power in comparison. A quick search on Google for Mini Laser Engraver will throw up a few for under £100 (GBP).

However, one problem with engraving a pen is that the laser needs to be focused on the distance between the head to the substrate in order to mark it effectively and as a pen barrel is round, if the writing or design goes too far off centre (the focus distance) around the barrel it will go out of focus and the laser won't engrave (burn) that area or it will be a poor result. I don't have one (yet) but have seen them working. Just a heads up if you're planning one.
