Yep, this is the way I do the bottoms at present. In fact I've just finished a cherry bowl using an old mouse mat. Upholstery sponge is another useful product to use.
Peter, I shall most certainly keep your observations in mind, mate! I don't need any more flying objects around here - it's bad enough when the missus is hoovering!!!
