Welcome Mike get yourself a close fit twist drill in the brass tube, mount it in a wooden handle keeping the length short of the brass length and use it by hand from either end. I use potato and regard it as invaluable. I tend to do things in batches of up to a hundred at a time this way I formed methods that suit me for each process. I use disk sanders with great success to square face my blanks every time, talking on Skype with Mark in the Northern Territory tonight about this.

Welcome to the forum I mention some things I do not so as to infer you should only you could the best way is the one that you find easy, repeatable, comfortable and as safe as you can make it.

Wow. What a kind and generous welcome. Thanks for all the advice folks.
Will post some pics as soon as I actually produce a pen.
Could be a while though, what with low temperatures and even lower skill levels . . .

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum. I use dental wax for sealing the ends of tubes before inserting them into the blanks.
