I've been giving this a little more thought & I'm thinking of inserting a 7mm bush into the nose of the box wood which should prevent any enlarging of the hole, not that so far I have notice any wear, but it's early doors & prevention is better than cure.

Doug, this would give a sloppy fit the actual mandrel size will need to be measured and a slip fit provided to be of use in your project. I found using a tiny end mill kicked at slight angle enabled me to do this with my brass sleeve over in Aus its much harder to find precision tools, trust this helps in your quest.

Spot on mate but I wonder if Peter is referring to the play between the internal sides of the bush & the mandrel thread, I do have a few tight bushes (no tittering) so I could probably use one of those as they're not a lot of use for anything else.
