Can't harm it Phil, but trapping it between your headstock & tailstock should mean it don't move.
The biggest prob you'll have is getting the tailstock in the centre of the foot, unless it's still marked, if it isn't In the centre then it will be out of balance.
Just stand out the way when you switch your lathe on, at a slow setting.

Thanks Woody, that's what I had in my mind.

It's just the need for a pair of those plastic pants when I start the lathe up that's bothering me. :ciggrin:

Does it help if you use one of those non slip mat things like you use under a chopping board on top of the paper towels, to give a bit of extra grip?

No Phill you could turn a disk the same shape as the bottom 1/2 of your dish them use the non slip mat if it is the router mat with the holes in it then the pattern and colour could be transferred on to the bowl that is why I stoped using it and addopted this idea regarding the grip if the dish is compressed between the chuck and tailstock then that will be fine for light cuts which is all you need to take anyway even if using non slip matting
