Hi Mark
thanks for that, the tormek is expensive for what it is though don't you think?
I visited Australia many years ago, Darwin, courtesy of the RAF and found it hot with a shortage of vegetables!:winking:

How long ago? I never noticed the shortage of vegetables there, if fact whenever I drive up there I fill the boot with veggies on the way home.
I am 1000km south, if you drive slow its a 10 hour trip.

The Tormek may be expensive but worth it.

Welcome Trev... Photos of rusty old lathes is as much food to us as brand new ones, so don't be shy

You will get razer sharp edges with a wetstone but only need that for the skew. Go for the Sorby pro edge and diamond sharpen your skew if you use one. With a wetstone you'll spend a lot more time setting up and sharpening than with the pro edge which takes seconds.

Hi Trev

but gouges tend to groove the surface of the stone which is pretty soft.
I sharpen my turning tools and use them straight off a dry bench grinder, just need to be carefull not to overheat the edge.

Bob, This happened to me when I first bought mine, this was my fault for pressing down too hard and leaving it in one spot.
I now use the entire width when sharpening.:thumbs:

Easy for a newbie to do and always by too much pressure and too long on the stone. I don't think I've drawn the temper from an edge in 20 years. I will now I've said that though
I do run a slipstone on the inside of gouges these days whilst I never used to bother. I don't know if it makes any difference as the wood soon knocks off the wire edge.

I quick question. Can I expect to get wifi in the wilds of Oz next week or has it not reached there yet:whistling::funny: I'll have withdrawl symptoms if I can't log in to read the gossip:winking:

Many, many, many years ago. Darwin was pretty much a single storey town then, must have been 1972, I seem to remember lots of large beasties crawling through the hut we slept in during the night. The Swan brewery was good though! :drunked:
