In the Pen Turning forum Penpal suggested I show some of the pens I have made. These are part of a collection of woods I have started to build as and when I can find new timbers. I chose the European style because they are cheap, critical as I already have about 150, and more importantly they have a lot of wood in the design. Sierra types would not be so good.
All these 15 are dalbergia species ie the true rosewoods. The left most of the two black ones (8) is Dalbergia louvelii (Bois de Rose) a super wood with a lovely dark violet colour when freshly turned which unfortunately darkens with age until it looks very much like dalbergia melanoxylon (African blackwood) which is on the right (9). Probably my favourite (at present) is the 5th one = Dalbergia frutesens. This image does not show all the detailed beauty of the woods but I wanted to show them all together.
