WEll over twenty years ago I commenced using Burl slices and cups as pen rests etc together with Australian coins inset for significance representing birth years.

My dealings with Captn G AKA Garry Nichols and his wife Vicki were to have a profound turn when by a quirk of fate a Pay Pal payment was misdirected and snaffled up by someone with an almost identical name and identical E Mail addy

Garry had made for me (he makes incredible Watch Part Blanks) blanks and a rather new venture for him Laser Cut Faxcimile of The Declaration Of Independance on beautiful timber about 11 by 14 inch and 3/4 inch thick.

He Garry said dont worry do your best when I offered to pay twice, wait until Pay Pal solves the problem. It took a month or two honour was satisfied and the recalcitrant offender coughed up fully, reinstating the money.

So I looked for a suitable piece of Brown Mallee Burl to make this hanging Plaque about twelve inches long..

Garry and his Wife Vicky live in Otsego in the Southern Precinct of Minnesota where the Pink Jewel is located in the south. They live off a tributory river there and run Charter Boat Tours and Fishing Trips on Lake Michigan. The burl figure darn near replicates the Map of Lower Michigan. The two Lock surrounds like portholes around the coins. The Bronze propellor for the boating activities (used by scale modellers for racing boats).

In later years I gave the Watch Part Pen made from the blanks I bought from him to our GP who saved my life more than once over time.

I was reminiscing recently on the great pleasure I have had with insert coins and Burl Timber particularly Brown Mallee Burl.

Peter.

In a recent post you almost complain about having too much burls in Australia, too difficult to cut with a chain saw :sob: , you poor soul Peter mate! :envy:
This piece is just wahoo! Is it regular quality you are used to at you place, or did you wait, pay or saw a lot before you got this one?

No I made a thinnish slice, I had downloaded from the net an outline map of Michigan with the intention of cutting the overall burl outline as I had done for Seamus in Texas for him at another time.

Looked at the burl pattern, it nigh on matched the outline, lucked out there mate. Before this I had never heard of the Michigan area being divided above where Lake Michigan and Lake Huon meet. Since Garry lives in the south of Michigan I was concentrating on the whole southern precinct.

It actually was the first piece I selected. Beginners luck eh.

For a swap with the other Pierre I cut an outline of France, I will try to find a couple of pics. Right now I am making a burl pen rest for one of the specialists who has turned my medications around in a saving way.

Because I have a mate one of the Burl Getters in Australia I have seen more burl than most guys ever will. Because I love Brown Mallee Burl the reason I use it most.

Cheers mate Peter.
