A colleague of mine really likes the look of the Box Elder Burr used by Johhny on the Mistral on this link: http://www.penturners.co.uk/wood-turned-items/16567-box-elder-burr-mistral.html

I've taken a hunt around the usual places in the UK on my list but can only find it at Stiles and Bates for £6.45 / blank stablised.

Having not looked at this wood before I'm not sure if this is the going rate or over the top, I know it's burr and stablising isn't free or instant. A bit of digging shows that Box Elder is maple, so would maple burr then be the same?

:goesred: As you can see, newbie looking for guidance here.

Suggestions for other similar wood options highly appreciated.

Box elder is in the maple/acer family but isn't the same as a lot of the maples we have in the UK
£6.45 for a stabilised pen blank is an excellent price.
Not sure if you are aware but the pink/red hue that is common in most box elder fades in sunlight.

Stabilised I have pens for thirty years looking good and I agree paying for quality is a good idea. Like many trees the colour is an aberration which makes it hard to find top stuff.

Peter.
