Just back from the open day & what a glorious day it was, it was great to meet up with Billy from the forum & a few members from my local woodturning club.

Nic Westermann was demonstrating his blacksmithing skills, it was really interesting to see a rectangular blank of steel being forged into an axe head.

After punching a hole through the blank Nic started by shaping the neck

He then moved onto the heal keeping the hole open with a former whilst shaping it for the handle

Finally shaping the blade.

This photo shows the head standing on the anvil, shaping finished & also a blank the same size from which this head was forged.

I also met & had a long chat with a very nice lady turner Lesley Churton from Sheffield who was demonstrating acrylic pen turning.

I managed to control my spending to just a couple of Cocobolo blanks, an Olive wood blank, a countersink, 2 Liberon wax sticks & a extendable magnetic thing-e-ma-bob

Having handled a Nic Westermann axe, I can honestly say they are a superb piece of kit and one is on my "want list"
Great photos Doug

Good to see you there Doug and nice weather, seemed a bit quieter in general than the other two events i've been to there, plenty of room to move about & no long queues at the till, maybe it's just got to expensive on the last point

Cheap blacksmith the sign says 12.00 perhaps that meant time, I had no idea axes were still made one on one as this one was. Thank you for the education its at least 60 yrs since I expected to get even a towbar made by the blacksmith here in Canberra. The lady was the cleanest worker of plastic I have ever seen and I agree her work was excellent thanks for the pics.

Peter.
