During the manufacturing process, they use lubricants especially for drawn tubes so it does not harm to clean off any residue left over. I have in the past done both ways. I have managed to break off blanks from the tubes but whether that was down to the way I glued them or the type of glue or even wether I cleaned the tubes off, or even just me being in a hurry and heavy handed I will never know.
