I agree with Brian, care should be taken and ensure that you are safe at all times.
I personally have used a piano wire with handles on the ends for a number of years, you can get all sorts of swga as well.
I would be very careful with the brake wire as it is made up of many small wires wound together and they are a greater risk of failing and causing damage to the user.
