The wife was on at me about those Laserlinez puzzle pens, so I tried something. Sycamore and walnut pieces in a rather lovely cherry blank. Comments and criticisms welcome.

Could you do the full monty? If you can then I'm in.

Not at the moment, Phil. Happily this pen got SWMBO talking about adding a rotary axis to my CNC machine, so if she loosens the purse strings just a bit you never know ...

Just for scale, this is what the 'pieces' looked like before being set into the blank.

Kind regards Peter.

Very technical young man and nicely executed with the puzzle in the plainer piece and a lovely feature grain, a wise choice of mixed timbers on a cigar kit for a geezer.
May I be so bold as to inquire what software one would use on said CNC machine to perform such wondrous magic?

You may with pleasure, good sir! I use Inkscape to draw the artwork, then save as a DXF and import into CamBam to plan the cuts. Then finally it's off to the machine which runs Mach3. Inkscape is freeware, CamBam has a generous trial period, and Mach3 is way cheaper than any other decent solution out there.

Hmmm Have you ever put yourself in an awkward situation and wished you hadn't done that?
Your answer has almost totally bamboozled me good sir, although I shall endeavour to learn your procedures as it greatly intrigues me.
Reminds of an occasion many years ago when I did a moony in a group photo of a shooting party.
Time passed and at local election time a poster was produced with a blown up picture of my moon, and a caption saying "vote for George, your local BNP candidate".
This was not only posted in the local pub but also the village / church hall and every lamppost for a radius of 2 miles.
I still haven't learned my lesson have I?
Diplomatic corps will miss me when I am gone.

It's not actually as complex as it sounds, George. I'll post up a step-by-step with screenshots if that helps? Maybe in the Tips and Techniques forum.

Thank you young man that would greatly interest me, a thinking along the lines of it may be a bit cleaner than the lathe in my bedroom and quieter too.
I have done some reading on your procedures, it seems to me it's cad to cam to g-code unless one is prolific with g-code to start and new where to make the spindle travel to.
I assume you are using laser as oppose to spindle which I think as a starter kit would be cheaper and more advisable to gain experience.
I may look around, any advise on where to start. only as a novice experiment you understand.
