Only been turning for a few weeks, pens only and looking to buy a spindle gauge, being a pensioner its must be cost effective. Just need it for small boxes. Any idea or help would be appreciated.

Hello James - welcome to the forum.

Gouges vary enormously in quality. The very cheap ones don't last very long because they don't hold their edge very well, and are therefore a false economy because the necessity to sharpen them frequently will rapidly convert them to filings.

For a reasonably priced, good quality gouge, I would look at Robert Sorby, available from Turners Retreat (who are owned by Robert Sorby).
For a higher priced, best qulity gouge, without paying stupid money for gimmicks you don't particularly need, I would look at Ashley Iles. They're better because they hold their edge longer, but they are more expensive than Sorby. The Sorby ones are more than acceptable though.
