    Jiggling about

Done a little bit of jiggling about this morning. Made a small jig for the drill press. This jig will keep the blank square and stable whilst drilling. I hope to put it through it's paces over the weekend. Feel free to copy it :ciggrin::ciggrin:

    A First for me

Both a first followed by another chuffin mis-hap (nothing new there) First off I was drilling a hole in a brittle bit of acrylic and next thing it just broke up, I say broke up but exploded is nearer the mark. 12.5mm hole. This has never happened to me before and I am glad I was wearing a full...

    Drilling a Resin blank

Hi guys, I have been asked to make a pen for a friend and they want it made from resin. When I have been drilling my wood blanks I have noticed that the blank was getting hot and smoking slightly and I am scared that I get a blowout with the resin blank. I have read that you can use a dry lube...

    Advice on Chucks and Jaws

Having established the principles of pen-turning, just about....i feel that the one area that needs the most improvement for me is how to drill the blanks most effectively and efficiently, without drilling off-centre, or splitting. I currently use a drill on a stand but the problem is that it...

    Chuck/Jaws question

Howdy Folk, Apologies for the newb-ish question, but thought it better to seek your opinions. When the Mrs bought me a lathe (Jet 1015vs), she included a chuck that was out of stock (axminster clubman sk100). Since I'll need to be drilling the blanks on the lathe, I've been looking at their...

    Amalgam blanks

Just a quick question regarding amalgam. Is this more akin to polyurethane or polyester resin? I got an amalgam blank from Vince at Turners Workshop and when I was drilling it today, the swarf seemed more like polyester to me. My concerns are really about how brittle amalgam is. :thinks:
